Radical self-care is more than just a buzzword. For women especially those juggling roles as mothers, wives, sisters, aunts, and professionals it’s about making a bold shift: putting your needs at the center, even when the world tells you not to.
Why Radical Self-Care Matters
Many women are taught from a young age to put others first. We care for our families, support our friends, and give our all at work. But what happens when we give so much that there’s nothing left for ourselves? For women from diverse backgrounds, this pressure can be even greater, with cultural expectations and systemic barriers making it harder to ask for help or take a break.
A Personal Story: Learning to Choose Myself
Let me share a bit of my own journey:
As a working mother, wife, sister, and aunt, I always focused on others and their needs, often ignoring my own. Even after beating cancer twice, it never occurred to me that I was still putting everyone else before myself. Eventually, I realized that living this way had simply become too hard. With time to reflect, I began to understand what my own needs are and now, I make it a priority to honor them every day.
This realization didn’t come easily. Like many women, I thought self-care was selfish. But I learned that radical self-care is about survival, healing, and thriving not just for me, but for everyone who depends on me.
Redefining Priorities: From Self-Neglect to Self-Priority
Radical self-care means redirecting your energy:
From always saying “yes” to others, to sometimes saying “yes” to yourself
From feeling guilty about rest, to seeing rest as necessary
From hiding your struggles, to seeking support and community
Self-Care Looks Different for Everyone
For women from different cultures and backgrounds, self-care might include:
Connecting with community or faith groups
Honoring family traditions
Practicing mindfulness or prayer
Seeking therapy with someone who understands your culture
Setting boundaries with loved ones, even when it’s hard
Practical Steps to Start Radical Self-Care
Check in with yourself daily. Ask: What do I need today?
Set one small boundary. Say “no” to something that drains you.
Reach out for support. Talk to someone you trust, or join a group where you feel seen.
Celebrate your progress. Every step counts, no matter how small.
Community Matters
Remember, you’re not alone. Radical self-care is also about building community finding spaces where you feel understood and supported. When we share our stories and support each other, we all grow stronger.
Your Turn: What’s one small way you can prioritize yourself this week? Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments we’re in this together.
This is a whole bar. "Radical self-care is about survival, healing, and thriving not just for me, but for everyone who depends on me." It is the irony of airplane mask. We have to put our masks on first but it shouldn't have to be from crisis. What happens we choose to do it from places of ease. This article has me thinking...🤔
